India Visa Guide for Australians
Travelling to India is an incredible experience - vibrant, soulful, expansive and often deeply transformative. But before you find yourself wandering colourful bazaars in Rajasthan or watching the sunrise over the Ganges, there’s one practical step to organise first: your visa.
The good news? For Australians, the process is usually straightforward.
Most Australian travellers visiting India for tourism apply for an e-Tourist Visa online before departure. This electronic visa system has made travelling to India much simpler than it once was, and in many cases approval arrives within a few days.
The first step is deciding which visa length suits your journey. Many travellers choose a 30-day tourist visa for shorter holidays, while others opt for a one-year or even five-year tourist visa if they plan to return to India regularly. If you’re joining a retreat, pilgrimage or extended journey, a longer visa can provide greater flexibility and peace of mind. Bear in mind that if you apply for a 5 year visa, and your passport runs out mid way through that period, you will need to apply for a new visa regardless of any time you have left on your existing one.
When applying, you’ll usually need:
A valid Australian passport with at least six months validity
A passport-style photo
A scanned copy of your passport
Your travel details and accommodation information
One of the most important things is to apply through the official Indian government visa website or a trusted provider. Unfortunately, there are many unofficial sites online that charge inflated fees. When you log in, make sure you keep your application number as you will need that later to log back in and print off your actual visa/
Once approved, your visa approval will arrive via email. Log back into the same site you used to apply, and print a copy of the actual visa and also save it on your phone. While immigration officers often work digitally now, having a physical copy can make arrival smoother. If you haven’t heard for a few days double check your junk, or log in and check the status. Quite often their emails can be blocked by your server. Likewise when you list your job, if you are a journalist or a writer, you will most likely have to provide a lot more information about the type of writing you do, what you have had published etc.
A common question we hear is: “How early should I apply?”
Generally, around 2–4 weeks before departure is ideal. Some visas are processed quickly, but it’s always wise to leave extra time rather than feeling stressed close to your flight.
Another thing to know is that India can feel administratively different from Australia. Sometimes processes are wonderfully smooth; other times they require patience. Approaching the experience with calmness and flexibility from the beginning is actually part of preparing for India itself. The government website for the eVisa is notoriously tricky so do give yourself plenty of time and patience.
And remember - once the paperwork is complete, the real journey begins.
India isn’t just another destination. For many people, it becomes a turning point, a reset, or a remembering of something deeper within themselves.
