How Long Should You Spend in India

One of the biggest mistakes first-time travellers make in India is trying to do too much, too quickly.

India is not a country you simply “tick off.” It’s vast, layered, emotional, intense, beautiful and deeply alive. The real magic often begins once you stop rushing and allow yourself to settle into its rhythm.

So how long should you spend there?

For first-time travellers, two weeks is often the sweet spot.

This gives enough time to experience India without feeling completely overwhelmed. You can immerse yourself in a region - such as Rajasthan or Kerala - while still allowing space for rest, integration and spontaneity.

If you only have 7–10 days, it’s best to focus on one area rather than trying to cover multiple states. India is enormous, and travelling between places can take longer than expected. Slow travel almost always creates a richer experience than constantly moving.

For travellers seeking a deeper spiritual or transformational journey, three to four weeks can be extraordinary. This allows time not only for sightseeing, but for connection:

  • sitting in sacred spaces

  • adjusting to the pace

  • building relationships

  • receiving teachings

  • processing emotional shifts

  • allowing India to work on you

Because it often does.

Many people arrive in India expecting a holiday and leave feeling changed in ways they never anticipated.

It’s also important to factor in energy levels. India can be stimulating to the senses - noisy, colourful, busy and emotionally expansive. Giving yourself slower days between major experiences can make the journey far more nourishing.

A beautifully curated itinerary matters too. The difference between exhaustion and transformation is often in the pacing.

Rather than asking:
“How much can I see?”

A better question may be:
“How deeply do I want to experience this place?”

India rewards presence far more than speed.
