The Ultimate India Packing Checklist

Packing for India is different from packing for Europe or Bali. Comfort, practicality and cultural awareness matter far more than fashion.

And the truth is - you need far less than you think.

The best way to pack for India is lightly, thoughtfully and with flexibility.

Loose, breathable clothing is essential, particularly in warmer regions like Rajasthan or Kerala. Natural fabrics such as cotton or linen work beautifully in the Indian climate and help you stay cool while remaining respectful of local culture.

For women especially, modest and comfortable clothing tends to feel easiest. Flowy pants, maxi skirts, loose dresses, kaftans lightweight scarves and tops or kimonos that cover the shoulders are ideal.

A scarf quickly becomes one of the most useful things you pack. It can:

  • cover shoulders in temples

  • provide warmth on planes

  • protect from dust

  • shield from the sun

  • add comfort during travel days

Comfortable shoes are also essential. India often involves uneven streets, temple steps, train stations and long walking days. Most travellers alternate between comfortable walking shoes and easy slip-on sandals.

Other essentials include:

  • electrolytes

  • hand sanitiser

  • tissues or toilet paper

  • a reusable water bottle

  • sunscreen

  • insect repellent

  • any medications you may need

  • a simple first aid kit including immodium!

One of the most important things to pack, though, is energetic spaciousness.

India is not a place where everything goes perfectly according to plan - and that’s often where the magic lies.

  • Pack patience.

  • Pack openness.

  • Pack curiosity.

And perhaps leave a little room in your suitcase too, because many travellers return home with textiles, journals, spices, jewellery, sacred objects and treasures gathered along the way.
